At the same time as the Indonesian Resurgence Day on May 20, 2017, Pudak Scientific held the “Workshop of Biotechnology Learning”. This workshop was for science/biology teachers of junior high school and senior high school, anyone interested to improve their competence and knowledge in biotechnology were welcomed to register as participant.

This workshop in biotechnology was a new theme of Pudak Scientific workshop that was held based on the consideration that biotechnology could be a solution for human life problems. This workshop was expected to be able improve learning process of biotechnology in the hope that students will have a role in solving those problems in the future.

The workshop at Pudak Training Center was attended by eighteen participants from various region of West Java. The workshop begun with a material conveyed by Dr. Adi Rahmat, M. Si., a lecturer of Biology Education Department of Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) Bandung. He emphasized about biotechnology roles in facing today’s human needs of food, health, energy, and environment.  

After the first session, participants took picture with Dr. Adi Rahmat, M.Si., took a break and had lunch. Workshop activity was continued at 1 p.m. western Indonesian time by visiting Pudak Scientific’s factory. In the factory participants were invited to witness production process of Pudak Scientific products. After that, participants returned to Pudak Training Center and had experiment activities. Participants were enthusiastic in conducting various conventional and modern biotechnology experiments that included:

• hydroponic making
• simple DNA isolation
• doughnut making
• kefir making

Experiments conducted were modified in way that it could be conducted in learning activities in school.

Workshop was ended by enjoying the doughnut made during the experiment session. Participants were happy and satisfied after attending this workshop. While enjoying doughnut, one participant expressed his satisfaction after attending this workshop, thus he knows about kefir, which is one of biotechnology forms, and how to make it. Last but not least, we always hope that out workshop could help improving Indonesian educators’ competence for a better Indonesian education.
